MPs debate Fire Stations (Warwickshire)
Wed, 30 June 2010 | Debate – Adjournment and General
Summary
Warwick fire station needed to remain open to better serve the needs of local residents, MPs heard today.
During a debate on Fire Stations in Warwickshire, Communities and Local Government Minister Robert Neill detailed that Fire and rescue authorities were required to produce and regularly update an integrated risk management plan, sometimes called an IRMP, which identified and assessed a local need and set out plans to mitigate existing and potential risks to communities. The process epitomised localism by enabling each fire and rescue authority to decide how best to provide fire and rescue-related services, he asserted.
Warwickshire Fire Service contended that its plan would ensure that current fire cover was maintained across all areas and improved in some, he added.
In detailing that consultation on proposals was underway, Mr Neill stated that Ministers did not intervene in the operational proposals of a local authority’s IRMP.
Opening the exchanges, Conservative Chris White decried plans to close Warwick fire station, adding that 12,000 constituents signed a petition against the plan.

NI Executive – Justice Minister attends NI Fire & Rescue Service ‘LIFE’ Scheme at Hydebank
Fri, 25 June 2010 | Northern Ireland Executive Press Release

Justice Minister David Ford today congratulated a number of young offenders in completing the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) Scheme.
Twelve Hydebank Wood inmates took part in the week long course, which concluded with a practical demonstration and display of their newly acquired fire and rescue skills to staff and guests of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS), as well as the family and friends of the cadets involved.
Over the course of the last two years staff from Hydebank Wood and NIFRS have worked closely to successfully develop and adapt the programme for use within a custodial setting.
During the visit the Minister took the opportunity to speak to the cadets and invited guests.
Congratulating the participants he said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to gain valuable skills and confidence, which will be extremely beneficial to them in the future, and I am encouraged by the level of participation in the course.
“The objectives of the NIFRS LIFE scheme are at the heart of what the Prison Service is aiming to achieve by way of preparing inmates for release back into the community. It also gives participants an increased awareness of the work of the Fire and Rescue Service, and successful completion of the course gives them a real sense of achievement.
“May I thank and congratulate everyone involved – those that have successfully participated, and also to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and prison staff who have successfully collaborated to deliver the programme.”
Peter Craig, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said: “We are totally committed to working with young people to help build mutual respect and understanding between young people and the fire and rescue service. This particular LIFE scheme, working with young offenders, is part of our overall community engagement programme.
“By learning more about the work of Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service through practical skills based demonstrations and discussing the impact of deliberate fires, hoax calls and attacks on Firefighters, participants can clearly see the potential consequences of such actions.
“We are pleased to be working in conjunction with the Prison Service to deliver this scheme.”

SDLP McKeever – Fire at recycling plant ‘very worrying’
Mon, 5 July 2010 | Individual Politician Press Release

SDLP councillor Jim McKeever has described this weekend’s fire at a recycling plant in Campsie on the outskirts of Derry as a ‘very worrying’ development after it emerged someone was seen running away from the site just before the fire started.
Speaking from the scene Cllr McKeever, who is also a member of the NI Fire Authority, said:
“There have been a number of fires started in this area since the beginning of March.
“I spoke to people who told me someone was seen running away from the area when the fire started. This is a very worrying development – not least because there is always the possibility of loss of life.
“There are also 40 or 50 people employed at the City Industrial Waste site who depend on these jobs – especially in the current economic climate.
“Much praise must be given to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service for their prompt action in helping to put out this blaze.
“I would call on the PSNI to keep a closer look on the area and hopefully their ongoing investigations will lead to the perpetrators being caught and brought to justice.”
