FBU London Regional Committee Endorses RAP

THE FIRE BRIGADES UNION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 14 JANUARY 2011

FBU LONDON REGIONAL COMMITTEE ENDORSES RAP

The London Regional Committee of the Fire Brigades Union today voted overwhelmingly to endorse the recommendation to enter into a collective agreement with the London Fire Brigade (LFB) on new shift patterns consistent with the result of the consultative ballot.

The package, put forward by the industry’s Resolution and Advisory Panel (RAP) in November, was supported by 87 per cent of London members voting at the end of last year, in line with a recommendation from the London Regional Committee.

The package includes a 10.5 hour day shift and a 13.5 hour night shift. The Commissioner for the LFB committed at the LFEPA meeting to continue discussions with the FBU on any issues that may remain outstanding.

Ian Leahair, FBU executive member for London region said:  “We are glad that we are within touching distance of resolving this industrial dispute. Our members have stood firm, and in the end the brigade was forced to reach agreement with us rather than carry out their threat of mass sackings. The agreement provides for new working patterns which are more amenable to our members than the brigade’s original proposals. We will now concentrate on tying up the loose ends, and formally bringing the dispute to an end. And the lesson for the brigade is that they should think twice in the future before trying to get their way through the threat of mass sackings. We fought them off this time, and we would do so again if necessary.”
