ANNOUNCEMENT FOR A NEW STRATEGY FOR THE REGULATION OF HEALTH & SAFETY The Government today (21st March 11) announced a new strategy for the regulation of health and safety. This will include a further review of regulation which will be led by Ragnar Lofstedt, Professor of risk management at Kings College London.   It has also announced that proactive inspections by the HSE will be reduced by a third and that “low risk” businesses will therefore have no proactive inspection regime. The Minister also confirmed that the HSE will introduce fees for any further work in those businesses where inspections have highlighted breaches of the law.   Below is the announcement made by the Minister…

Fire Brigades Union starts process of investigating Southampton tragedy

Following the tragic deaths of brothers James Shears and Alan Bannon. FBU Regional Secretary Ricky Matthews said “The Union’s main aim in this process is to uncover the causes so as to prevent reoccurrence of a similar tragedy, and enable the families to understand the events that led to this terrible loss. “The union has begun to draw a team together to assist with tour investigation. FBU investigates Southampton firefighter deaths

The Fire Brigades Union has started its own inquiry into the deaths of two firefighters killed tackling a blaze at a block of flats. James Shears, 35, and Alan Bannon, 38, died at the 15-storey Shirley Towers in Church Street, Southampton. FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack said: “We want to find out what happened urgently, so that we can take steps to ensure that it never happens again.” The FBU said it would share its findings with police. It also plans to show the report to the Health and Safety Executive. Mr Wrack said: “I have already spoken to the police to assure them of our support and co-operation.” Two other firefighters suffered burns to…
