MP Harris to raise Oxon fire cuts in Parliament

MP Harris to raise fire cuts in Parliament OXFORD West and Abingdon MP Evan Harris has said he will raise the proposed cuts to the town’s fire cover in Parliament. Oxfordshire fire and rescue service says moving two full-time staff from its stations in Didcot and Abingdon will reduce county-wide shortfalls in cover, even though it will lengthen response times to emergencies in the two towns at evenings and weekends. Mr Harris said the proposals have not been widely-enough consulted on and is calling for a parliamentary debate. Dr Harris said insufficient people were made aware of four public meetings to discuss the changes. He said: “My concern is the proposal to downgrade cover in…

Oxfordshire CUTS PROPOSED!!!

Reduction in Fire Cover at Abingdon, Didcot, and Rewley Rd Fire Station Oxford Under its Integrated Risk management Plan for next year, Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service intends to reduce the level of fire cover at the above stations. The plan is to remove some cover from the whole time firefighters who currently give cover at Abingdon and Didcot on a 24/7 basis and to rely on cover from the stations Retained Firefighters. Retained Firefighters have primary occupations and also respond to fires and incidents within their community. They train for two hours per week and many give up to 120 hours per week commitment to the Service. However, due to the lack of training…

Support Your Fire Service

In an attempt to ensure better fire cover is provided in some rural areas of Oxfordshire, Fire Service bosses are proposing cuts to the number of full time firefighter jobs at Abingdon and Didcot fire stations. In addition, those that remain will see their working hours radically changed. The Fire Brigades Union, who were not consulted on the proposal, are deeply concerned about the impact these changes will have for the people who live in the Oxford, Abingdon and Didcot areas. If accepted, the initiative will reduce the number of full time firefighters at Abingdon and Didcot fire stations from 14 to 12 on each station. Alarmingly, there will be periods of time when none…

How To Lobby Your MP

Brothers/Sisters, Many of you will be travelling to Westminster on the 21st October for the ‘Part of the Team’ campaign and will be planning to lobby your MP.  Please read on for a practical how-to  guide. HOW TO LOBBY YOUR MP ‘Lobbying’ means contacting your MP as a constituent, informing the MP of your concerns on an issue and asking the MP to do something. While you can meet the MP in the constituency, in this case the intention is to visit Parliament as part of a lobby organised by the FBU. Given the present standing of MPs following the expenses scandal, and an impending General Election, MPs are likely to be keener to meet constituents.  You…
