Dates for education courses 2010 Pension & Medical Appeals                                                          29th January This course is designed for FBU Officials who may have responsibility for representing members at Medical Appeal Boards and who wish to develop their confidence and skills in preparation and representation. It will also be of use to those Officials who have responsibility for providing pensions’ advice to members. OFFICERS’ SEMINAR – WORTLEY HALL – MONDAY 19TH AND TUESDAY 20TH OCTOBER 2009

Further to the recent and very successful Seminar of Officer Members held at Wortley Hall, the Executive Council has agreed a further Officers’ Seminar should take place this year and this has been scheduled to take place on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th October 2009. (Region 12 of the Fire Brigades Union currently has a vacant position for an ONC rep therefore any officer member considering attending this seminar would be required to email a request to the Regional Secretary). Bucks 5 Watch Shift Update

At the full CFA meeting in February this year the authority decided to seek to change FBU member’s terms & conditions of employment to a 5 watch duty system starting on the 1st January 2010. Following this FBU members have, quite rightly been inundating Brigade officials with calls.  It’s been the main topic of debate around mess tables, fire station branch meetings, the Buckinghamshire Brigade Committee and also the FBU Regional committee. Union learning rep Higher learning modules

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between unionlearn and Foundation Degree Forward (fdf) was signed to progress their mutual agenda for supporting and increasing work-based progression to higher learning. This has led to both partners working on a joint project in the TUC’s southern and eastern region to support employee and employer engagement in higher skills development, and in particular looking at the opportunities and benefits work-based programmes such as  Foundation degrees can deliver at the workplace – the ‘Accessing Higher Education in the Workplace’ Project. The project will be producing a practical guide/toolkit for ULRs on negotiating HE with employers and will be seeking employers and their respective unions to participate. It also plans to…

National School 2009

Please click on the link at the bottom of this page for an application form for the 2009 National School.  This is being circulated earlier than in previous years to allow ample time for leave to be arranged. It is not a prerequisite to be an Official of the Union to attend National School.  However it is hoped that Branch, Brigade and other Officials will apply, including those who have previously attended a National School. Dyslexia FBU Guidance document.

The FBU launched its Dyslexia guidance document at the ULR School this summer (2009). Dyslexia affects at least 10% of the population and it is likely that the fire and rescue service employs a significant number of dyslexic staff. Dyslexia is Greek for difficulties with words and is also known as the hidden disability.   Dyslexia is covered by the Disability Discrimination act the document gives FBU officials guidance on supporting members. The FBU guidance describes in detail the umbrella of difficulties that dyslexic staff may face and offers practical guidance on how to identify, assess and support dyslexic staff.
